THE BODY

THE BODY – what an amazing invention!
There’s so much about it that I’d like to mention.

Let’s start with the head and move down to your feet,
And highlight some things I find pretty neat.

Like your brain, such a complex machine,
That interprets experience, so you learn what things mean.

It’s the seat of consciousness, the master in charge,
Of homeostasis and emotions at large.

It tells over 600 muscles to move and they move,
And 200 plus bones to groove and they groove.

It regulates heart rate without a thought,
And recalls information that you once forgot.

In front of it are the eyes, the window to the soul,
Like a camera capturing light, they widen and they roll.

Some are blue, green, brown, or white,
And miraculously adjust from day to night.

Below them is an olfactory tool the nose,
It lets you smell toast burning or the scent of a rose.

And what about the sounds that everyone hears,
Captured by instruments known as the ears.

They contain THE BODY’s smallest bones,
Which funnel the pitch and volume of tones,

To then vibrate tiny hairs in a curve,
And trigger impulses to the auditory nerve.

Then there’s the mouth with lips, teeth and a tongue,
It helps us form words that are spoken or sung.

And it chews up food, sensing taste when we eat,
Such as salty, sour, bitter and sweet.

The esophagus sends saliva soaked sustenance to digest,
Right next to the trachea in the midst of your chest.

Speaking of the windpipe, it works like airmail,
As the diaphragm allows us to in and exhale.

As we do, vocal cords, folds of tissue in the throat,
Let us speak, or sing, or make the sounds of a goat.

The torso holds so many organs – who knew?
Let’s list them off and describe what they do.

Lungs bring O2 in and take CO2 out,
The heart with four chambers, pumps blood all about.

The stomach somehow makes food a part of you,
And what it can’t, the intestines turn into poo.

The liver, so versatile, it’s multi-purpose,
It detoxifies, metabolizes, and regenerates its surface.

The lymphatic system captained by the spleen,
Traps invaders and keeps everything clean.

The pancreas is a complicated gland,
It makes insulin and gives digestion a hand.

The kidneys produce urine that is stored in the bladder,
On top of them, adrenal glands jump when something’s the matter.

Your reproductive organs are worth the whole world,
As they pleasurably make a new boy or new girl.

With two arms, two legs, two feet and two hands,
Unique fingerprints and DNA stands.

It’s all encased in skin that protects and heals,
Regulates, excretes, supports and feels.

THE BODY grows, then slows, then eventually goes,
Don’t take anything for granted from your hair to your toes.

Remember, you’re made in the image of God,
What a wonderful creation, this thing called THE BOD.
