SETBACK TO COMEBACK
We are all in the ‘House of Hope’ because we’ve had a SETBACK.
A SETBACK is not a complete failure; it is simply a time when you are a little behind or slightly off course in a situation.
This story has played out many times before in the realm of sports.
Take your pick…
It’s the fourth quarter; down by two touchdowns; with three minutes to go…
Behind by three runs, bottom of the ninth, two out, bases loaded…
Third period, losing by a goal, thirty seconds left…
But ‘It Ain’t Over ‘Till It’s Over’.
So, how do you turn a SETBACK into a COMEBACK?
I’ve pieced together a few answers in the ‘House of Hope’.
First, you have to believe it’s possible; you have to change your perspective about what you think you know, about who you are, and about what will be. You have to visualize the win.
Second, you have to practice, practice, practice. Yes, it takes hard work and thorough preparation to be of calm mind in a pressure situation. You have to arm yourself with the skills and techniques that enable you to perform under worst-case scenarios.
Third, you must surround yourself with a team that is dedicated to the cause, people who believe that you can do it, a group that has each others’ backs, that will pick you up when you get knocked down, and that energizes/encourages you to go on.
Fourth, you have to make your own luck. As the saying goes, ‘you have to be good to get lucky’. Success is the sum of a series of tiny decisions made along the way… to cut right instead of left, to pick the top corner instead of forcing the five hole, to take a chance and swing at the first pitch.
Yes, a SETBACK can turn into a COMEBACK – just like that.
And people forget that, while in hindsight life is short, when you’re in the thick of it, life is long, real long.
So look, if you’ve lost a regular season game, don’t get so down and pissed off that you give up, because there’s still the playoffs and, most important, the championship.
What happens when you keep going after a loss?
When you believe you can win?
When you practice, practice, practice?
When you surround yourself with a like-minded team?
When you create your own luck?
Well…
You score a touchdown; capture the onside kick; toss a last minute Hail Mary; and turn the two-point conversion… you win.
You pull the goalie; put the pressure on; one goal, two goals… you win.
You keep your eye on the fastball; hear the crack of the bat; feel the roar of the crowd, grand slam… you win.
So remember, there’s still more time on the clock.
Our team loses a few good players today, but know that there is a champion in all of us, ready and waiting, no matter where we end up… the game is not over.
How will your COMEBACK story play out?
Go Team.
