MOTHER
MOTHER – you are like no other.
For in your womb I was formed,
The one from whom I was born.
I couldn’t survive without you,
Long after the date I was due.
Remember, when I used to be, terribly two and tryingly three?
Then, you worked twenty-four hours a day,
There were no thanks and there was no pay.
Just a tiny cry asking for mum, or to change a bum, or ‘more food… I want some!’
As I grew, you’d talk with me, you’d walk with me, you’d rock with me.
You taught me hope and many a verse,
You’d allot me soap when you heard me curse.
You cooked; you cleaned; you chauffeured; you convened.
You doctored, you pondered, you lawyered, you laundered.
I know I caused you to worry and wait,
When I was in a hurry or got home late.
And I’d say, ‘MOTHER, you tend to smother…’
I realize it stems from a love only a MOTHER knows,
As the seed of a soul she’s been assigned to grows.
I appreciate you giving up your time and dreams,
I cannot over state what that truly means.
And for all the prayers that you would say,
When I was with you or somewhere far away.
You maid the grade MOTHER,
I would not trade you for another.

Now to those whose MOTHER was abusive,
Or was insultingly intrusive, reclusive, or elusive.
Or who represents a fractured connection,
That resentfully won’t recapture affection.
Or, regrettably, was a relationship that never got started,
Or, unfortunately, was a kinship that’s been dearly departed.
I’m sorry. But please know…
There is a nurturing part of our soul,
That longs to fulfill a motherly role.
Turn to the earth, nature, and above,
You’ll learn the worth of maternal love.
I hope you can feel that unconditional care,
That is safe and secure, gentle and fair.
To impart with me sister and brother,
A heart-felt - ‘I love you MOTHER’.
